Member Spotlight: The Leaning Maple, A Friendly Gluten-Free Restaurant & Event Space in Downtown Olympia
May 15, 2026
Since opening in 2021, Moon Child PNW has become a community staple for families looking for thoughtfully curated children’s clothing in Downtown Olympia. The boutique feels bright, welcoming and intentional. Colorful racks hold stylish secondhand finds, soft bamboo sleepers, and everyday essentials ready to take home. Plushies from Olli Ella add an extra sense of whimsy throughout the shop.
As the only children’s resale shop downtown, Moon Child offers something unique: a space where mindful shopping and great style coexist.
“What we’re most known for is the quality of our secondhand pieces,” says owner Heather Drittenbas.
“We’re very intentional about what we accept, so everything in the shop feels clean, stylish, and wearable. In addition to resale, we bring in new children’s pieces from small, independent brands, many of them women-owned. Our goal is to create a space where families can shop sustainably without sacrificing style, while also supporting small makers and giving great clothing a second life.”

Built by a Mom Who Gets It
As a mom of three, Heather understands the need for affordable, high-quality clothing and kid’s gear firsthand.
Kids grow quickly. Clothing takes a beating. Grass stains and chocolate milk spills are inevitable. That’s why, when it comes to retail, Moon Child prioritizes durable natural fabrics like hemp, bamboo, and cotton that can truly stand the test of time.
Before opening the shop, Heather spent years thrifting for her own children. She loved finding affordable outfits that still felt stylish and well made. When the area’s last children’s resale shop closed during the coronavirus pandemic, she saw a gap in the community.
“What started as a need I saw as a mom turned into something much bigger,” Drittenbas notes. “A space for families to shop sustainably and feel good about what they’re buying.”
That mission is what guides the shop today. Giving clothing a second life helps keep quality items out of landfills while making thoughtfully made pieces more accessible for families. Retail brands are selected carefully with an emphasis on products from women-owned companies, aligning with the values of the store.

Thoughtfully Curated, Down to the Last Detail
Every piece at Moon Child is chosen with intention. Heather spends hours researching brands, following trends, and listening closely to what local families are actually looking for. From sizing needs to seasonal styles, she works hard to create a shopping experience that feels personal and genuinely helpful.
That level of care continues behind the scenes, too. Heather often spot cleans and launders clothing herself before it ever reaches the sales floor. Her goal is to make secondhand shopping feel elevated and easy for busy parents.
At Moon Child, shopping is less about buying more, and more about buying thoughtfully.
What makes Moon Child especially refreshing is the lack of pressure. The boutique was built with an understanding that every family’s needs, budget, and parenting style are different. Rather than encouraging overconsumption, the focus is on helping customers find pieces that truly work for them.

A Full Circle Moment in Downtown Olympia
For Heather, the best part of Moon Child is making connections with families downtown.
As someone who grew up in Olympia, opening the store felt truly full circle. Her mother owned shops downtown for years, making the neighborhood feel like home long before Moon Child opened its doors.
“I have a deep personal connection to downtown Olympia,” Drittenbas shares. “I care deeply about seeing downtown continue to thrive, and it means a lot to contribute to that in my own way. Downtown Olympia has such creative, eclectic energy, and I’m proud for Moon Child to be a small part of what makes it so special.”
Looking ahead, the hope is that the shop continues growing thoughtfully while staying rooted in community. There are plans to expand events and create more opportunities for parents to connect with one another.
“I want everyone who walks into Moon Child to feel seen, welcomed, and comfortable,” Drittenbas says. “As a stay-at-home mom with three young kids, I remember how isolating that season of life could feel. Some days, you just need to get out and connect with another adult. Because of that, I always want parents to feel like they can come into the shop anytime, even if it’s just to browse, chat, or take a moment for themselves.”
At its heart, Moon Child is more than a children’s boutique in Downtown Olympia. It is a place where families can shop sustainably, feel supported, and watch their children find their own style over time.
