Event Details

Join us for the Tlingit Dance Paddle Painting Workshop with Wéidaaká Yóodóohaa (Bill Pfeifer, Jr.), a hands-on exploration of the artistry and cultural significance of Tlingit ceremonial paddles (axáa) from Southeast Alaska’s coastal communities. You’ll paint a 24″ long, 4″ wide, 3/4″ thick paddle, learning about the deep symbolism these objects hold in Tlingit culture—representing connection, identity, and storytelling.Traditionally, dance paddles serve a distinct ceremonial purpose. Used in winter gatherings and adorned with clan motifs, they visually narrate clan stories, express identity, and honor ancestors. This workshop continues a vibrant, generations-old tradition, teaching participants about materials, carving techniques, and traditional pigments unique to Tlingit art.By participating, you’ll connect with a living tradition and contribute to preserving Tlingit cultural identity. The workshop takes place at Harbor House in Olympia, a beautiful hub for Indigenous arts. All are welcome—no prior painting experience necessary!
