January 30, 2024The Olympia Downtown Alliance recently awarded a Microgrant to the Donald Building, also affectionately known as Buck’s, located at 209 5th Avenue SE. The dedicated owner is utilizing the microgrant to undertake a crucial preservation effort – replacing the windows on this historic structure.
Architectural Significance: A Legacy by Joseph Wohleb
Designed by renowned architect Joseph Wohleb in 1924, the Donald Building stands as a testament to Olympia’s architectural heritage. The six-bay, two-story commercial building was commissioned by Olympia developer James Martin. Notably, it is part of a cohesive pair of Mission Revival-influenced buildings, with the Jeffers Photography Studio next door also crafted by Wohleb.
A Glimpse into History: Purpose and Legacy
Initially housing retail stores on the first floor and offices on the second, the Donald Building has seen various transformations over the years. Believed to be named after Martin’s son, Donald, it became a contributing component to the Downtown National Historic District. The Buck family, particularly Anne Buck, played a vital role in the building’s history.
Anne Buck: A Steward of Innovation
Anne Buck, who took ownership of the building in the mid-80s, was a true entrepreneur and fixture in the Olympia community. Operating an English-style tea shop called Chattery Down, she later transformed it into an internationally known culinary spice shop. Buck’s eccentric flair for the unexpected turned the Donald Building into a de facto small business incubator.
Preserving the Legacy: Window Replacement Project
Now, with the support of the Microgrant from the Olympia Downtown Alliance, the Donald Building is undergoing a window replacement project. This effort not only enhances the building’s structural integrity but also ensures the preservation of its essential features. The initiative aligns with the Alliance’s commitment to maintaining the historic charm and vibrancy of downtown Olympia.
