Event Details

Join Arbutus Folk School for an evening of Moroccan music featuring Brahim Hikmi and guest percussionist Aziz from Seattle. No registration required! Simply drop in to attend this event.

The performance will include instruments such as the guembri, guitar, castanets, and djembe. Attendees will enjoy both traditional Moroccan songs and Gnawa-inspired songs written by Brahim. Along with the music, attendees will learn about the rhythms, instruments, and history of Gnawa music.

Brahim has been living in Olympia since 2014. He grew up in Morocco immersed in Gnawa culture and popular music of the region, and researched the connection between American blues and Moroccan Gnawa music as part of his ethnomusicology program at The Evergreen State College. He has produced an album, called Jabaryu, featuring Gnawa master Fettah Remouz. Brahim is also a co-founder and songwriter for the Olympia-based Gnawa jazz rock band, The Beehees.
